Dutch Oven Demonstration

We demonstrated the fine art of gourmet Dutch oven cooking at Crescent Supply in Modesto on June 26, 2010. There is a LOT more you can do with a dutch oven than hobo stew.

Dutch Oven Demonstration

by Kathy Zumbrunn

How many cooks does it take to put on a Dutch oven demonstration? I don't know if there is an answer to that, but it seems that we are never short of cooks when we put out the word that we need them. Such was the case on June 26th when we were asked to put on another demonstration at Crescent Work and Supply in Modesto. At first I thought we were only going to have three or four chefs; but by the time the day rolled around we had 10 cooks and 13 fantastic dishes.

I'd like to thank all our chefs for spending their Saturday morning cooking over hot coals on a very warm morning so that those folks that came by to check us out received some very informative instruction on the art of Dutch oven cooking. And then there was the added bonus of sampling all the goodies! The menu included: quiche, biscuits, pineapple/breakfast sausage hors d'oeuvres, chile beans, chicken & dumplings, chicken & rice, cookies, two cherry cobblers, peach cobbler, strawberry rhubarb cobbler, triple berry muffins and chocolate cake! Unfortunately the crowd was pretty light this time, so we "had" to eat all the rest of the food. There can be too much of a good thing! We were all stuffed by the time we were finished, but it was worth it. Boy those chefs sure know what they are doing!

Let's all give a big thanks to all our cooks: Barbara & Sandy Newsome, Jon Caudill, Larry Schneider, Rudy Dezzani, Katherine Reeves, Julie & Carl Perry, Nancy Gross and Michael King. Other Mid Valley members who came to help out and give support were: Johnny Leal, Richard Hodgson, Carol Jo Hargreaves, Roy Collins, Ellen Monk and me.

In between cooking and talking to the crowd, we all wandered into the store and took advantage of the wonderful sale going on. I am sure most of us came out with an item or two. Who could resist?

All in all it was a wonderful day and I give thanks to everyone who gave up their Saturday to come on down and represent Mid Valley BCHC.

And thank you to Craig Stott and all the staff of Crescent Work and Outdoor for supplying all the necessities for us and for inviting us to come to the sale to do our demonstration. It is always an enjoyable day.
