Dutch Oven Group May Meeting

by Kathy Zumbrunn

I think BCHC members are just as good as the Postman: "Neither sleet, nor snow, nor driving rain.blah, blah, blah." Yes, on Saturday, May 2nd we held a DOG at our house. The lawns were mowed, the house clean enough and the garden was in bloom ... all was ready to go. Then at 6:30 a.m. a little breeze started. "Oh no!" I said. Oh yes! By 7:30 the wind was up to at least 13 mph and getting worse by the second. But did that stop our gallant cooks? Nooooo! We just put up tarps around the carport to hold back the worst of the blast and the cooks got busy. The wind tried its best to push through the tarps and knock as much over as possible, but the cooks forged on and came up with another scrumptious and bountiful meal once again.

We had some terrific dishes: Jon Caudill made chili colorado and a pot of beans, first time Dutch oven cooks Larry Schneider and Carol Jo Hargreaves made enchiladas, Carl and Julie Perry made a wonderful tortilla casserole, Victor Pedroza made "Victor's Surprise": a pot roast with red potatoes, carrots and onions, Michael King made chicken and rice, Susan Erlandson made Dutch oven pizza, Nancy Gross made a roasted chicken and scalloped potatoes, Vicki Morales cooked up some winter squash, Sandy and Barbara Newsome made posole, 2 loaves of home made bread (that melted in your mouth) and their grandsons made monkey pizza bread.

We also had a three bean salad, home-made macaroni salad, two potato salads and rolls. Then came the desserts! Susan Erlandson made her to-die-for Mississippi Mud cake, Rudy Dezzani made a yummy pineapple cake and Carl and Julie Perry made a blueberry dessert that was oh-so-good! Dennise Davis and her daughter made chocolate dipped strawberries! Oh my gosh! We were all stuffed to the gills by the end of the day. (If you chose not to come, aren't you sorry now?)

Others who came and participated, besides the ones listed above, were: Johnny Leal, Susan Whinery, Claudia Parrish, Alan Alcock, Jaimie Dillon, Jesse Johnson, Mary Johnson, Bob Daniel, Margie Pereira, and Don Butler.

We also had 6 children in attendance. The wind didn't affect the kids at all ... they ran and played in the yard, exploring all the nooks and crannies, fed the fish and tested all the cacti to see which one had the sharpest spines!

While the cooks cooked and the wind blew, Bob Daniel and Julie Perry sat down and played and sang some wonderful tunes. A few people joined in and had a real sing-a-long going before long.

At the end of the day, everyone used their LNT skills and there wasn't much to do but put away tarps and chairs and dump the garbage. I'd like to thank everyone who came and made our first DOG a wonderful day. In spite of all the nasty wind, we had a great turnout of members and friends. Everyone went home pleasantly stuffed, wind-blown and worn out, but happy. Let's do it again ... minus the wind!
