Competitive Trail Ride

We took part in a competitive trail ride, sanctioned by the American Competitive Trail Horse Association, April 3, 2010 at Woodward Reservoir. A competitive trail ride sets typical trail obstacles in front of a horse and rider. They compete to see who can surmount the challenges the quickest.

Competitive Trail Ride

by Kim O'Hagen and Julir Dorrepaal

Well, after a very exhausting day, we (Kim and Julie) are very happy to say that the ACTHA Competitive Trail Challenge held at Woodward Reservoir on April 3, 2010 came off with only minor challenges. The overall opinion by riders and helpers was "it was a great event".

The weather on Friday proved to be a bit frustrating but on Saturday, it dawned clear but cold. We still had wet feet from the rain the previous night but did not have to don slickers to ride the trail. What we thought should have been a fairly easy obstacle, the "Rio Grande" or water, was more like trying to get your horse into the ocean rather than our little lake. It seems that the wind drummed up some white caps. "The Wild Bunch" or the log jumble, if you will, proved to be one of the first obstacles that most riders were able to complete. The other obstacles proved more or less challenging to those adventurous souls who chose to participate.

Our guest speakers, Dr. Jody Hallstrom and Steve Bauhr, gave some wonderful advice and demonstrations. They seemed to be enjoyed by all the riders. The "biscuit burner" (Dan) and his helper, Gary, kept the food grilling and on the riders' plates during the speakers' presentations.

We were able to give out some wonderful prizes because of our very generous sponsors. Our sponsors were SO generous that we were also able to have a raffle of prizes to both our riders and our volunteers, just to show our appreciation for their participation.

This ride was the first event that we have ever put together. We hope that everyone, riders and volunteers, had a good time. We want to thank all the volunteers who came out and helped pull the event to a successful conclusion. We could not have done this without you!!!
